Cancer Resource Center of the Desert (CRCD) provides FREE services to men, women, and children of all ages diagnosed with cancer, living in Imperial Valley, and who face challenges like:
Initial emotional crisis upon receiving the cancer diagnosis:
CRCD provides emotional support. Increases knowledge about the specific diagnosis.
Fear of the implications of the cancer diagnosis:
CRCD utilizes tools from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) & other national organizations, and educates the patient and family.
Difficulty understanding the cancer diagnosis:
CRCD uses specialized tools to review specific information about diagnostic work-ups, staging, treatment options, etc. At patient’s request, assist with information on obtaining a 2nd opinion.
Difficulty understanding the treatment process:
CRCD educates the patient & family about the specific treatment plan associated with their diagnosis & provides them with educational materials.
Difficulty communicating with physicians:
CRCD assists the patient/ families to communicate their questions, concerns, and other important information to their physicians through counseling. At patient’s request, CRCD also will speak to the physician on the patient’s behalf or communicate via memos or letters to the physician.
Language/Cultural differences:
CRCD staff is bilingual (English/Spanish) and bi-cultural. CRCD educates patients in their language, addressing cultural issues.
Lack of insurance or underinsured:
If uninsured, CRCD assists the patient to apply for medical coverage including specialized State programs for certain cancer types. If underinsured, CRCD determines if there are co-pay relief programs the patient is eligible for and assist in the application process.
Lack of adequate transportation:
CRCD determines if the patient is eligible for transportation assistance through local programs & applies on their behalf when eligible; will register & apply to national organizations that provide specific transportation assistance; augments those services with complimentary gas cards.
Reduced Income due to diagnosis& treatment:
Consideration of State & Federal programs, the patient may be eligible for, including State Disability Insurance, Social Security Disability, & Supplemental Security Income & assistance in applying for such programs when needed.

Enhanced Care Management is a no-cost program for managed health plan members who need extra support for complex health conditions or social challenges. When you join ECM, you’ll have a dedicated care team that works with you to achieve your health goals and connect you to important local services.
What Is Enhanced Care Management?
What Is Enhanced Care Management?
ECM is a free service designed to help members with significant medical, mental health, or social needs. Your care team will work closely with you to coordinate the right support, including help with:
- Physical health care
- Mental and behavioral health
- Substance use treatment
- Access to social services
Your care team can also assist you with:
- Finding and scheduling appointments with providers
- Managing medications and follow-up care
- Coordinating post-hospitalization services
- Arranging transportation
How the Program Supports You
When you join ECM, you’ll be matched with your own care team — including a Doctor, Nurse Services Care Manager, and Care Coordinator. This team will work with all your doctors and your personal support network to develop a customized care plan that meets your needs.

- Keep your doctors informed and connected
- Help you set and reach your health goals
- Connect you to vital community services — including food, housing, jobs, childcare, legal aid, and more
- Provide support in person or by phone — so you’re never alone in your care journey
Over the last three years, ECM has helped more than 500 community members — reducing hospital admissions by 90%.

Who Is Eligible for ECM?
You may qualify if you:
- Have unstable housing or are at risk of homelessness
- Have multiple health issues and have visited the ER or been hospitalized multiple times in the past 6 months
- Need mental health services
- Struggle with drug or alcohol use
Were recently released from jail or prison and need help adjusting to life in the community
