Meet Our Team

Helen Palomino, LCSW is the Chief Executive Officer of Cancer Resource Center of the Desert (CRCD). She earned her Master of Social Work degree from San Diego State University in 2008. Helen is deeply committed to improving access to cancer care and addressing health disparities affecting Latino communities. Through her leadership, CRCD continues to support individuals and families impacted by cancer while collaborating with researchers and community partners to advance equity in cancer care. Outside of work, Helen enjoys spending time with her family, her two Rottweilers, listening to podcasts, and enjoying good Mexican food.

Lourdes Murcia is the Assistant Director and Lead Patient Navigator at the Cancer Resource Center of the Desert. She has over 15 years of experience serving underserved communities in Imperial County, with a professional background spanning oncology navigation, hospice care, and medical social work. Lourdes earned her Master’s degree in Social Work from San Diego State University in 2023 and participated in a Global Health Education program in Oaxaca, Mexico. She has collaborated as a research assistant with UC San Diego’s Oncofertility team on projects focused on survivorship care and financial navigation in oncology. As an Imperial County native, Lourdes is deeply committed to advancing health equity, social justice, and reducing barriers to cancer care for the communities she serves. Outside of work, Lourdes enjoys spending time with her family, caring for her pets, traveling, and listening to music.

Reyna Alvarez began her journey with Cancer Resource Center of the Desert (CRCD) as a volunteer and was later welcomed as a staff member after demonstrating a strong commitment to serving the community. Her enthusiasm for helping individuals and families in need, particularly within our diverse community, quickly stood out. Reyna’s genuine passion for service, positive attitude, and uplifting energy are felt throughout the office, creating a welcoming and supportive environment for both staff and those we serve. She takes pride in assisting patients with compassion and care, making a meaningful impact every day.

Melanie Lira is a community advocate and social services professional with over 20 years of experience serving individuals and families throughout Imperial County. She brings extensive case management experience and a strong background in outreach, program planning, and community education. Melanie is known for her ability to connect with diverse communities and for her effective communication skills, including presentations to community members, professionals, and funding agencies. Her dedication to education, collaboration, and service continues to support CRCD’s mission and strengthen community impact.

Abigail Paredes joined Cancer Resource Center of the Desert (CRCD) in 2025 and has since demonstrated strong dedication to supporting individuals and families impacted by cancer. She has continued to develop her skills in patient navigation, care coordination, and community outreach, bringing compassion, reliability, and a positive attitude to her work. Abigail is committed to learning and growth and plays an important role in helping connect patients to essential resources and supportive services within the community.
